Dragon Age - Origins: Awakening

Awakening is an able followup to one of last years' best games.
Review By Chris Leonaides

The first thing I would like to say is Dragon Age: Origins was one of my favorite games in recent years. On that note I was very disappointed in Awakenings. The first scene of the game disappointed me when my download content armor did NOT carry over to the new game. Granted it was not a tough battle to start the game but it still was inconvenient to have to do it naked. The battle system is unchanged though and that is a good thing for the series.

Another thing that I noticed right away was a lag-like effect in the game when in combat that got very bad while casting spells. Sometimes the game would stop altogether and sit for up to 3 seconds before action would start again. The game also froze a few times which is a minor issue as well but easily could of been fixed prior to release. Other than these flaws the game is as beautiful as ever and looks amazing. It was one of the only thing that saved this game from being unplayable for me.

The creators haven't lost their sense of humor either. If you found the little conversations that your party members and NPCs have out in the cities then you are in luck. There are not as many memorable ones, but there are definitely those ones that make you die laughing. The new party is fewer than the previous game but they all fill their roles well and are unique from the characters of the original game.

The only major downfall of the game in my eyes is the length of the game itself. I finished my first play through of the game in about 18 hours. Compared to the 60 or so I put into the original game it was a bit of a let down to beat Awakenings in a week. Surely there will be download content eventually for it but it will add even more cost to the game so it isn't really giving you anymore bang for your buck.

In conclusion, if you loved the original game you will find this game enjoyable too if you can get past the minor glitches. If you are on a budget for games I would avoid this one it just does not have enough meat to it to make it worth the casual gamers money. Only people that truly loved the first game should buy this and but be ready to head back to the store soon.
